Jeremy and I made a few pacts on our honeymoon regarding how we would commemorate our anniversaries for the rest of our lives.
One of the pacts we made on our honeymoon was that we would get away to celebrate our anniversary every year. Sure life circumstances, lack of finances, and kids, may inhibit us from a week long vacay in Hawaii, but even if it’s camping in our backyard for a night with no distractions, we committed to setting aside unhindered time each year to celebrate our marriage. If possible we are going to try to go to a new place every year – someplace we both have never been. Even if it’s just a new beach, an Airbnb in the mountains etc.
One definition of honeymoon is, “any period of blissful harmony.” So why can’t we just be in blissful harmony while on vacation in the 3rd, 4th, and 50th year of our marriage?
The second pact Jeremy and I made on our honeymoon was to write each other letters to be read on our anniversary the following year. For example, we wrote each other letters on our honeymoon that we wax seal pressed in envelopes to be opened on our one-year anniversary. Then last year, we read those letters, and wrote each other new letters to be sealed and read on our two-year anniversary (this year)!
Last year we stayed in a tiny bungalow on the water in the sleepy town of Quilcene, Washington! We loved exploring the Olympic Penisula and NW Washington so much that we decided to stay on one of the Islands in the Puget Sound this time!
We found a cozy Airbnb (get $35 off your Airbnb by signing up >>HERE<<) right on the water! It was probably the best Airbnb experience we have ever had. The host was over the moon accommodating and even let us check out late on our last day because we fell in love with Vashon and just wanted to stay! You can check out the place we stayed at >>HERE<<
Getting there was so fun! We made a playlist of songs that reminded us of year-two, and took our first of many road trips in the new car! Side note: Jer and I are victims of the VW buyback (an extreme blessing)! So basically, Volkswagon is buying back our Jetta TDI… Praise Jesus!!!! Hence, the new car. We are now proud Subaru owners! Let the storms roll in! #prayforsnow
After a 7 hour drive from Bend and a short ferry ride, we made it to Vashon Island and out epic Airbnb! By the time we arrived, literally everything on the island was closed. No joke. We kinda loved it thought. It felt like traveling back in time a few decades to wear towns actually rested. There wasn’t even a grocery store open (there is only ONE on the island anyways) and the gas station had just closed at nine! However, there was one grimmy dingy dive bar that stayed open until 2:00 a.m. (or “whenever they feel like closing” – literally what it said on the door).
Our rumbling bellies forced us through the door… We sat down at the bar and after about 10 minutes (there was only one other dude in the restaurant) a woman appeared and immediately stated, “Hey if you guys are looking to eat I don’t recommend ordering anything fried… our greaser hasn’t been cleaned, and well… you should probably just stick to burgers or cold sandwiches.” We were actually grateful for her honesty, and put in for a few burgers. While we were eating, an elderly man came up and sat next to us.
While we were eating, an elderly man came up and sat next to us. The first thing out of his mouth was, “You guys really respect each other.”
Stunned by his forthrightness, we turned towards him and smiled. “Thanks, well, we try to be…”
He proceed, “I was watched you guys interact and you communicate. That’s good, keep communicating or you’ll end up like me.”
*30 minutes of a life story later…..

Here is a brief excerpt of my anniversary letter to Jeremey (written on our 1 year anniversary, read on our two year anniversary!):
“…I can’t wait to continue pursuing Beating50Percent with you, to changes marriages, to inspire masses, and to learn and grow together. I have a feeling this year the harvest will be bountiful. If, when you are reading this, we have yet to travel, let’s go, if there is something weighing heavy on our hearts to do, let’s do it. If there’s something we should risk for joy and freedom, let’s leap. May we never lose our willingness to go and fo, our adventurous spirit, and our sense of urgency to make a life, not just a living. You are so handsome and capable my love. So wise and pure, and you make me feel free….”
Cheers to year-3!
